Mojomums - Profile of a working mum.

I've been featured in Mojomums profile of a working mum!

Number of children:

I have two boys born 25.04.14 and 13.05.16.

Job title:

Founder of A Little Bit Dotty. An online store - gifts for mums, babies and little ones.

What don’t I do?!

Website design/development (self-taught), social media management, sourcing new brands online or visiting trade shows, finances, writing blog features, advertising and the list goes on!

I only have 9 hours a week completely childfree, so after school/nursery drop off I down tools and crack on with the tasks that require the most concentration and no interruptions and worry about putting the washing on and tidying up the breakfast carnage later!

Otherwise I work in the evenings and the occasional few hours at the weekend when I need to catch up.

Childcare arrangements:

Our eldest son started reception class in September and our youngest is at nursery 3 mornings a week from 9-12pm.

What I love about work:

After dedicating those early years to the boys I am now able to do something for me that I am passionate about. I am my own boss and love the freedom and flexibility that this gives me. One of the challenges that I have really loved which came as a surprise is teaching myself to build a website – who knew I had a creative streak in me!

What I find difficult is:

Switching off! I think because I haven’t worked for a few years and now I have something to run with that I am excited about, I just want to spend every minute that I can to grow the business and get the brand name out there. I’m always jotting notes down in my book or on my phone and then I hear “Mummy, look at me I’m waiting for you” and feel really bad!

The beast that is Social media – it’s a minefield but plays such an important role in running a business today.

My working life would be easier if…

I didn’t put too much pressure on myself, one thing I am very guilty of which then causes frustration. A Little Bit Dotty has only just turned one so I have to remind myself that everything I have achieved so far is brilliant and if I don’t achieve a particular goal within the timescale I have been given (by myself) that’s ok.

If only there were two of me and more hours in the day!

Work/mum life balance:

Parenting is tough and sometimes when I am juggling so many balls I feel guilty that I’m not being the best mum, business owner and wife I can possibly be. Before I know it, our youngest will be at school so I want to make sure that I make the most of this time – the laptop and mobile can wait until they’ve gone to bed, although sometimes it’s easier said than done!

How having children has changed the work I do:

Before I had children I had a successful career as a Project Manager in London. Since the boys came along my priorities have changed. Yes, I still want to be successful in my business endeavors but now I want a job that is flexible and enables me to be able to attend all those important school events in my boys lives and so "A Little Bit Dotty" was born.

Fantasy job / If I wasn’t doing this, I’d be…

I love the idea of working on a game reserve in Africa. The wildlife and scenic views on that continent are AMAZING.

Mojomums helps mums get their mojo back – what advice would you give to mums who feel they have lost theirs?

I found it really hard adjusting to motherhood despite always wanting to be a mum and at times I felt like I had lost myself and my mojo. The most important thing is to make a little time for yourself.

It’s amazing how even 10-20 minutes reading, solving a crossword, having a bath or exercising can make a big impact on how you are feeling. It’s important to surround yourself with friends and others that are in a similar position to you so that you can raise your spirits together and you will then realise that you are not alone.

Anything else?

Follow your dreams and if you have an idea just go for it. You’ll never know unless you give it a go!
